According to researchers, heartburn drugs had been related to pneumonia in older adults of 60 years or older. Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are drugs used to decrease acid production in order to protect the stomach. Another problem is that 40% of older adults are prescribed the drug, but the truth is that 85% of these adults do not need them. One of the reasons is that drugs are prescribed for a specific illness, but continue to take them once the illness Is treated. The research does not explain the incidence of pneumonia.
