Dealing With Persistent Hiccups

Dealing With Persistent Hiccups

They Can Be Caused By Acid Reflux Medication, Sleeping Pills, And Corticosteroids, Among Others

According to a study, hiccups are more common than previously assumed. These can be occasional, or persistent when lasting more than two days, and even intractable when lasting more than one month. Also, 90% of the cases apply to men over 40. Hiccups are triggered by stimulation of the vagus and phrenic nerves, and the cause can be a chronic health condition such as arthritis of the sternum, heart failure, and even herpes infections or blood clots in the lungs. Other causes are medications such as corticosteroids, sleeping pills, acid-reflux drugs, chemotherapy treatments, some of anti-Parkinson's drugs, and antibiotics. They can be treated by interrupting the nerve stimulation. This can be done with drugs for treating convulsions and multiple sclerosis, dopamine blockers. Other treatments include anesthesia and acupuncture. More details click here.
