Eating Disorders Can Have Long Lasting Effects On The Body, Even After They Have Been Treated

Eating Disorders Can Have Long Lasting Effects On The Body, Even After They Have Been Treated

Binge Eating Can Alter The Metabolism, Preventing Weight Loss, While Forced Starving Can Cause Acid Reflux And Permanent Change In The Digestive Tract

According to a study, eating disorders can have long time effects, which can make recovery difficult. Among the eating disorders are binge eating, anorexia, and bulimia, among others, which can result in physical and emotional damage to the patient. The most common is binge eating, which often goes undiagnosed. Excess food ingestion alters the body’s set point weight and defines a new normal metabolism level. Therefore, when trying to lose weight, the metabolism just slows down and does not return to the original point. Therefore, weight loss efforts do not have the expected results for the patients, but a special diet and lifestyle can promote thyroid production and increase metabolism. Other eating disorders for losing weight by purging can also leave permanent damage after treatment. The patient may frequently induce vomiting, resulting in damage to the gastroesophageal valve due to induced acid reflux, inflammation of the esophagus, and the exposure to stomach acid can damage the vocal cords and teeth. But purging can be done also via laxatives, which can cause changes in the digestive tract, requiring medication for bowel movements. And if the patient is female, forced starvation can reduce the production of estrogen, leading to irregular or no periods at all, cause osteoporosis and risk the ability to conceive.
