Bacteriophages Can Be An Alternative To Antibiotics

Bacteriophages Can Be An Alternative To Antibiotics

They Don’t Attack Beneficial Cells

Antibiotics are one of the pillars of modern medicine, allowing the successful treatments of health conditions that were previously life-threatening. However, they have side effects, such as the affecting the beneficial gut bacteria. This is because antibiotics attack the bacteria responsible for the diseases, but also the beneficial bacteria. The answer might be replacing antibiotics with bacteriophages, viruses that attack and kill bacteria. Even though many may object using a virus to fight off bacteria, bacteriophages only attack bacteria, leaving human cells untouched, and can be very specific to certain bacterial strains, with no apparent side effects. This would prevent affecting the beneficial intestinal bacteria, which are associated with various long-term beneficial health outcomes. More details click here.
