Study: Acid Reflux Injuries May Be Caused By Inflammation

Acid reflux is considered as a reaction caused by excess acid in the esophagus and throat. However, a new model is proposing that acid promotes the production of inflammatory cells, which in turn, are responsible for the injury in the esophagus. This could mean that acid reflux can be treated by anti-inflammatories, not by antacids or other drugs, such as PPIs, which have harmful side effects. More here.
